Planning Around the Weather

DOE's Building America map puts San Diego County in the Hot-Dry climate region (IECC 2021 zone 3B, PNNL county guide). This region combines hot summers with low humidity: sun, dust and water supply are the usual planning issues, more than rain.

Dry, Windy Sites

Only about 15 inches of precipitation falls in an average year, in the driest tenth of U.S. places in our data. Dry ground usually holds a truck and a wheelchair well, but open, dry sites can get windy and dusty: ask for units to be staked or tied down on exposed ground.

Heat

About 62 days a year reach 90°F or more, more than most U.S. places in our data, most of them in the summer months. On sunny, dry sites, place units in shade where the site allows. In the summer months, ask how often units will be pumped and restocked, and put them where they get afternoon shade.

Freezing Nights

About 40 nights a year reach 32°F or below, fewer than most U.S. places in our data, mostly between late fall and early spring. Water-carrying units need a plan from late fall into spring: give your dates when you call and ask how hand-wash water and flush tanks are kept from freezing.

Events, Weddings and Parties

A four-hour summer event for 2,000 people needs 12 units on the PSAI event chart, or 14 to 15 with alcohol (PSAI adds 10–20%). Every cluster of restrooms needs at least 5% accessible units, rounded up; hard, dry ground usually works as the route to the ADA unit, loose sand or gravel does not.

Both seasons matter: a restroom trailer for a summer wedding needs power for its air conditioning, and one for a winter date needs heat and protected water lines.
